Born in Campbell County, Kentucky, son of Joseph Rich and Nancy O'Neal. Early life in Indiana; conversion to Mormonism, 1832; member of Zion's Camp; removal to Far West, Missouri; marriage to Sarah D. Pea; move to Quincy, Illinois; service as Brigadier General of the Nauvoo Legion and later as Major General; exodus west; arrival in the Salt Lake Valley, 1847, and settlement there; ordination as an apostle, 1849; trip to California to organize the Saints there; work in the Legislature, 1851; election as mayor, 1855; return to Utah during the Johnston Army episode; move to Provo, Utah; president of the European Mission, 1860-1862; removal to Paris Idaho.

Charles Coulson Rich was born on August 21, 1809, in Campbell County, Kentucky. He was instructed in the Mormon faith by Lyman Wight and baptized into the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints by George M. Hinckle in 1832. In 1838 he married Sarah D. Pea, the first of his six wives. Rich lived in Calfwell County, Missouri, and fought in the Battle of Crooked River. He and his family later settled in Nauvoo, Illinois, where Rich was made a member of the Council of Fifty and served in the Na...
